Hemoglobin Facts

  • Most common reason for low hemoglobin is low iron, but can be caused by many other things
  • Both high and low hemoglobin counts indicate defects in the balance of red blood cells in the blood.
  • Good health requires an adequate amount of hemoglobin. Without enough hemoglobin, the tissues lack oxygen and the heart and lungs must work harder to try to compensate.
  • Hemoglobin (Hb), the main component of red blood cells, is a protein that carries oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body, providing the strength you need. When you are anemic, less oxygen is able to reach your muscles and organs. This can leave you fatigued and unable to do the things you love to do every day!
